According to Bobby McGee, a professional running coach, your brain works the same way as a search engine. Type in “Do not find last month´s taxes” and the chances are that it will find exactly that. So when you tell your brain to tense up, the brain will access the program on how to tense up muscles. Telling to yourself that you don´t like to be stressed, will most likely get you even more stressed, chose your words and thinking and your brain will understand easier. Use affirmative self-talk and imagery focused on relaxation.
